Tips For Teaching Kids To Respect The Garbage Disposal

There comes a time in every parent's life when it is time to teach the kids how to do the chores. One of the first chores that children will learn when they are old enough is how to clear the table and wash the dishes. Kids can learn how to fill the sink and clean off the dishes properly, but one thing that you will need to concentrate on is the garbage disposal. If you are worried about your children using this mechanism, there is a good reason for it. Disposals are easy to abuse and getting them obstructed can lead to a hefty plumbing bill. Here are a few tips for teaching your children to respect the disposal.

Don't purposely put food down the disposal

One thing that most children and some adults will not understand is that the disposal should handle only small amounts of food. This should be tiny amounts of food that may be stuck to dirty plates or small amounts of food left in pans after the pans were cleared. Disposals are not made for large amounts of food, such as an entire plate of left overs. For this reason, you should teach your children to empty plates and left overs into the trash can so that the disposal does not get stopped up.

Create a compost pile

If you are interested in being green, one of the easiest environmentally friendly things to start a compost pile. Compost piles can be started inside of their own trash can and can be taken outside when necessary. Purchase a compost bin and teach your children to separate compost from throw away items. Items that can be composted are typically fruits, vegetables, coffee grounds, eggshells, and other completely natural items. Even boiled water can be placed in a compost pile to help break down large pieces. Creating a compost pile will provide kids with a way to concentrate on left overs.

How to operate the disposal

The disposal, just like the washing machine and the oven is a machine. It is possible to get hurt when using the disposal improperly. Teach your children to clear any obstructions and to keep their hands away from the sink when using the disposal. The disposal should only be operated in second-long intervals and the water should run the entire time to help wash down any food. Teaching respect for the disposal will make it easier to trust your children and make it easy to keep the disposal running properly.

If somebody makes a mistake and puts too much down the disposal, contact companies like Newman's Plumbing Service & Repair, LLC that offer garbage disposal repair.
